One study found that the rate was higher, with one case spreading to between 4.7 and 6.6 other people. By comparison, one person who has the seasonal flu will pass it to between 1.1 and 2.3 others. The paths to herd immunity in other high-income countries are likely to be broadly similar to the one in the United States. The timelines will vary based on differences in vaccine access and rollout and in levels of natural immunity—and potentially, in levels of cross-immunity and previous coverage of other vaccines, such as the BCG vaccine.
How effective is Paxlovid?
The data showed that participants (all of whom were unvaccinated) who were given Paxlovid were 89% less likely to develop severe illness and death compared to trial participants who received a placebo.

Even when herd immunity is achieved, ongoing monitoring, potential revaccination, and treatment of isolated cases will still be needed to control the risk of COVID-19. But these would fall into the category of “normal” infectious disease management—not the society-altering interventions we have all lived through this year. The short term will be hard, but we can reasonably hope for an end to the pandemic in 2021. The new vaccines may slightly accelerate the timeline—the ongoing surge in cases will likely continue into winter, which would increase natural immunity levels going into Q2.
Community levels measure the impact of COVID-19 illness on health and health care systems in communities. Every morning by 9 a.m., we extract the data from WEDSS that will be reported on the DHS website at 2 p.m. Counties may report their own case and death counts on their own websites. Because WEDSS is a live system that constantly accepts data, case and death counts on county websites will differ from the DHS counts if the county extracted data from WEDSS at a different time of day. Please consult the county websites to determine what time of day they pull data from WEDSS.
